Concerts benefit tornado victims
March 10, 2012 (Carmel, IN) --
Concerts at Carmel's Center for the Performing Arts last weekend were dedicated to more than good music. Crystal Gayle, who grew up in Indiana, the Soweto Gospel Choir and the Carmel Symphony Orchestra raised money to help the survivors of the March 2 tornadoes in Southern Indiana.
"This is our opportunity for us to help less fortunate people who have had a disaster that was thrust upon them," said Frank Basile, interim president and CEO at the center. "We as human beings should come to the aid of others." Audiences were asked for donations that were earmarked for the Red Cross, which is providing disaster relief. Volunteers were on hand to collect.
Carmel-based Nightingale Home Healthcare, which sponsors the concert series that featured Soweto (a choir from South Africa that usually raises money for AIDS relief), is matching the weekend's donations, up to $10,000. Gayle performed Friday in the Tarkington Theater, while Soweto Gospel Choir performed in the Palladium. The symphony performed Saturday at the Palladium.
