Nightingale Awards First Nursing Scholarship
December 06, 2007 - We are pleased to announce that Katherine "Katy" Mummert has been chosen to receive the first of the nursing scholarships to be awarded by Nightingale Home Healthcare. This scholarship is awarded to family members of veterans or veterans themselves who have served in foreign wars.
Katy is an excellent candidate for this grant because being a veteran seems to be a Mummert family trait. Her two brothers are Iraqi Freedom veterans; her father is a veteran from the Vietnam era; her grandfather was a WW II combat vet, and her great-grandfather was a Spanish-American War vet. She hails from a very patriotic family.
When her brothers were overseas at war, the entire Mummert family got involved with support groups and military functions. This involvement resulted in her father and Katy becoming members of the Patriot Guard Riders, which is a motorcycle organization that attends funerals of fallen soldiers and acts as honor guard/escort for the funeral procession. And according to Katy, "These fallen heroes deserve no less than our total reverence, so we felt compelled to show their families our appreciation and share in their grief."
Although Katy says she received some pressure from her brothers to don a military uniform and carry on the tradition, Katy says she opted for college to become a nurse. "My family believes in higher education, and I want to work in a field where I can help others," she says.
Kathy says that because she is personally responsible for half of her college expenses, the Nightingale grant is extremely welcome and appreciated. "I am the youngest of four children-my three older brothers are all college graduates who also paid for half of their college expenses through various means. This grant will enable me to pursue my goal to be a neonatal nurse without the need for loans."
