Nearly 1000 receive flu vaccine with efforts of Nightingale Home Healthcare

December 26, 2008 (Carmel, IN) -- Each year, over 200,000 people in the United States are hospitalized with influenza and over 36,000 die from influenza and related complications. This death rate can be dramatically decreased if all individuals are properly vaccinated.

Nightingale Home Healthcare recognizes that some individuals may have trouble getting to a doctor's office or flu clinic to receive a flu vaccination, so last year they undertook a program to deliver flu shots to homebound individuals. Nightingale was the only home health agency in Indiana to provide in-home flu vaccinations at no cost for traditional Medicare patients or veterans who were unable to leave their home due to age or disability. Nightingale Home Healthcare delivered flu shots to 102 homebound residents.

Nightingale also participated in the "Vote and Vax" campaign-designed to provide flu vaccinations for the public at polling sites. Besides offering the flu vaccine at their headquarters in Carmel, IN, Nightingale also collaborated with several senior centers and assisted/ independent living facilities to provide close to one thousand flu shots in 2008.
