Nightingale Saves Lives through Technology

Carmel, IN, July 10, 2006 -- For the past 10 years, Nightingale Home Healthcare has worked very hard to constantly seek out and utilize new and improved medical technologies so that its patients will benefit from the improved care and convenience that these devices provide. As a result, Nightingale has established itself as a pioneer and technological leader within the home healthcare industry.

Not only do these technological advancements help to provide peace of mind for Nightingale clients and their family caregivers, they have actually saved lives. Recently, Nightingale's telemedicine nurse received a report to our central station showing one of our patients as having a critical blood pressure of 227/110. The nurse called the patient, who said she felt fine and wasn't experiencing any shortness of breath or chest pain. Our nurse consulted with the Nightingale case manager and the doctor. The patient received Lasix that night. She was scheduled for a Doppler study the next day, and it was discovered that she had a blood clot in her groin. The patient was immediately hospitalized and started on a heparin drip. After only 1 ˝ days of inpatient care, she returned home and is now on Coumadin (a blood thinner). The patient currently has a blood pressure of 123/66 just one week after the incident. Thanks to the triage of our telemedicine nurse, Nightingale prevented this patient from having a stroke and pulmonary embolism.

In addition to telemedicine monitoring, Nightingale is leading the way for optimum patient home health care by also offering the convenience of on-site PT/INR checks. The agency was the first home health agency to offer the MedX Laser. With this device, Nightingale's licensed physical therapists are able to target infrared photo energy to afflicted areas of a patient's body, thereby substantially increasing local circulation and temporarily reducing pain. Dr. Dev A. Brar, President of Nightingale Home Healthcare, says, "These devices enable Nightingale to remain true to our mission, which is to enable individuals to remain independent and live comfortably at home."

Nightingale is also excited to announce a roll-out of the QuietCare Health Security system, which Dr. Robert Roush, Director of Texas Consortium of Geriatric Centers, has touted to be "…Perhaps the most important development in eldercare in a generation." This unobtrusive, discreet system provides automatic alerts of possible emergencies and early detection of changes in a senior's behavior. This allows Nightingale clients to remain independent and allows caregivers greater peace of mind knowing that their loved ones' behavior is being professionally monitored at all times. Nightingale is the only home healthcare agency in Indiana to offer the QuietCare system.
